Blankspace changing

As we move into a new year, some big changes are taking place. After careful thought and consideration, Blankspace will be closing its doors as of March 15th, 2010.

Back in 2006 we (Jason Byers and Kerri Johnson) were given a great opportunity to take over the artist run building located at 6608 San Pablo Ave. & following in the foot steps of our predecessor Lucky Tackle Gallery, we were excited to open Blankspace on March 18th. It has been a great 4 years and we are proud to have produced many thought provoking, cutting edge exhibitions, but now the time has come to make changes. Though we will miss the actual gallery space, we will not miss the ever increasing rent, badly leaking roof, drafty walls and general disintegration of the building that has been the home of Blankspace and its founders.

We are extremely thankful to all of you for your support and to all of the amazing artists that we were able to work with over the last 4 years. We look forward to an equally exciting and venturesome future and hope that you will continue to follow and support us as we embark on these new projects.

Kerri Johnson will be shifting her energies to working with BayVAN (Bay Area Visual Arts Network) and the BayVAN galleryBranch Gallery along with new partners Nicole Neditch and Brook Baird.

As partner in BayVAN and curator of Branch, Kerri will continue to exhibit strong, cutting edge art work from up and coming Bay Area artists and to cultivate relationships with rising talent. She will also continue to work with many of the great artists that she has exhibited while curating Blankspace.

Jason Byers will happily be focusing on his own art career and upcoming exhibits, including a solo show this April at Rowan Morrison. He will also be lending his efforts to the upcoming release of the debut LP from fellow Lady Genius cohorts Kyle Williams, Matt Stromberg and Brian Caraway - a ton of shows and summer tour are sure follow its release, stay tuned. www.jasonbyers.net

For those of you that love the Blankspace shop, fear not, Kerri and Lena Reynoso ( co-owner of The Compound Gallery) have combined creative forces on a great new shop called Professor Squirrel. The new shop features products from small, independent local & national designers and artists. The shop will be located inside the new Compound Studios location at 1167 65th St. @ San Pablo. Items in the shop are available online at www.professorsquirrel.com. Stay tuned for upcoming events to take place at the new locale.

Coming up on First Friday, March 5th we will be open until 10pm

Steuart's exhibit is a must see and we are thankful and happy that we will be closing the gallery with his work gracing our walls!

This event is planned to start at 2:00 pm on Feb 20, 2010 at Worth Ryder Gallery, 116 Kroeber Hall, Berkeley CA 94720.

If you have not had a chance to see this show, this Saturday is the closing party from 2-5 PM. We'll have musician Jake Coolidge collaborating with Blankspace gallery artist Peter Foucault's drawing robot at 3, and Justin Hoover and Jonathan Grover doing video kung fu performance art at 4. And really, what better way is there than that to spend a Saturday afternoon?

Then mosey over to Blankspace (we are open until 6pm) to see a great solo exhibit by awesome artist Steuart Pittman.

Blankspace is closed to the public for a couple more weeks. We have some exciting new announcements for 2010. Our gallery store now has an official name, The Shop. We are excited to announce that along with great local items offered year round, we will be hosting ongoing "pop shop shows" of curated items offered around a theme and available for a limited time. We are proud to be partnering with local curator and purveyor of fun ideas, Courtney Dailey.

Hey All.

It has been a while, but boy do I have some great new Indie Biz news to tell!

First, Lena Reynoso (of The Compound Gallery fame) created an idea for an indie biz shopping alternative to the post Thanksgiving "Black Friday", November 27th. We are calling it PLAID FRIDAY.

In the past 6 weeks we have been able to mobilize over 50 local businesses and online shops to become part of the day. We were also able to get some amazing support from The EastBay Express, Yelp, OakBook, and Oakland Grown..they have all given us ad space and have been sending out eblasts and announcements for us. To top it off, we had an amazing web designer, Nicole Neditch of Objet d'art donate her services to come up with the awesomely cute website plaidfriday.com.

In this body of work Glover deals with personal space and individuality. The curvilinear shape depicted in her paintings is the homemade concrete skate bowl in her back yard. This is a landscape built for a single leisurely and social activity: skateboarding. INDIE BIZ NEWS

Things over here at the Blankspace camp have been very busy. So I apologize for slacking on the Indie Biz of the Week section of the blog.

So, as I mentioned last time I have been in my Blankspace bubble lately, but, I do want to mention a great restaurant that I have visited on more than one occasion and hope to return to soon.

Weird Fish is a small storefront restaurant on Mission St. in SF. This place is great for several reasons, the first being the affordable and extremely flavorful and well prepared dishes. I am not always comfortable ordering fish that is not Tuna or Salmon, but last time I was there I ordered the catfish served "buffalo wing" style. I swear that it was better than any buffalo style chicken wing I have every had. So good.

The food is tasty and affordable and more importantly the restaurant supports sustainable fishing practices and as their website states..."We serve locally grown vegetables, & prepare fish that is primarily farmed and sustainable. We are making conscious efforts to embody a green business practice at Weird Fish. All of our fish is farmed sustainably."

I have to also mention the french fries which are a delightful combo of yams and potatoes, yum.

INDIE BIZ NEWS

Sadly I have to report that Magnet, one of my favorite boutiques on the East Bay is closing their doors next week. It is not all doom and gloom, Camille jsut had a baby and the decision to close came more from starting a new chapter in her life and not from the messy economy. Sad for me, but I wish her many happy days with her new baby. I have feeling we will be seeing other projects from her in the future.

I have not been out of my Blankspace bubble in the pasr few weeks, so I have not much to report, but I did go to Slash jeans today and they have tons of great new jeans in stock.

Charles Chocolates
Yes, my neighborhood seems to have had more than it's fair share of chocolate factories in the past..well with Scharffenberger closed we are sadly down to just one within walking distance (jealous much).
As if making delicious artisan chocolate is not enough to bring you into their store, they now serve Blue Bottle coffee!!!! Yep, that coffee, blue bottle + chocolate= happy days.

At first Charles Chocolates can seem a bit intimidating, like you may not be worthy if you are not versed on the history and origin or the precious cacao bean. From the super designed packaging ( I admittedly tried the chocolate for the first time, solely based on the aesthetics of the packaging, ah, marketing...) to the ultra clean store, it can be scary.

I have to say though, what made me more inclined to go check out the factory/store in person was seeing the owner Charles on the Food Network challenge program. He was competing in a chocolate challenge and pretty much bombed. Not that I am happy he failed, but it humanized the chocolate for me. Somehow seeing him showing us his vulnerabilities on TV, in front of millions, felt comforting to me. So I walked down to the store and went inside. What I found was a friendly staff and lots of free samples!! mmm chocolate.

So I am a big fan of mixing chocolate and fruit, Charles has these "Orange Twigs" that melt in your mouth. Here is the description online..." delicate milk chocolate ganache with a hint of fresh orange is coated in a thin layer of 65% bittersweet chocolate and then finished with a sprinkling of confectioner's sugar."...if you want to be my new BBF bring me a case of these...just saying....

What's up at Blankspace?
"How Do You Know" a group exhibit of 16 Irish Artists curated by Gallery 126 in Galway, Ireland.

The show at Blankspace runs through August 30th. We are hosting a Tea this Sunday 3-6pm, come by and check it out. Blankspace is proud to present a group exhibition curated by Gallery 126 in Galway Ireland. Blankspace has worked with 126 for over a year to produce exchange opportunities for local artists from both cities.

Local Bay Area artists will be exhibiting work in Ireland at the end of August. Both galleries share similar missions and goals when it comes to producing exhibitions; 126 and Blankspace are both artist run exhibition spaces that promote strong conceptual approaches and experimentation in artmaking.

In other news I rearranged the gallery store and brought in some cute new items. I am very excited to launch our online site, if all things go well it will launch at the beginning of September...I will keep you posted.

I also created a mural for the back wall, it had been a while since I had done a wall drawing, so I just went for it..here is a pic.

Urban Ore
So I am sure you all know about Urban Ore, but I have recently rediscovered how great it is. Until recently I had no particular hard to find item that I was in want or need of until I started restructuring the store area of Blankspace and then I began to realize I needed to take a walk over and check out the goods.

Not too surprisingly I found what I needed, some decent base board and some other cool stuff. Well... I may be getting a bit addicted to going over and checking what new items they have. Mostly I don't need a thousand old doors or windows, but I find a bit of inspiration from being around all the old wood and furniture.

The best part for me is that the people who work there seem to being going back to the old ways (I am referring to the old location in Berkeley) when you could haggle and often come away with free stuff included in your purchase. That makes me happy to be able to haggle a bit, for a while it was frustrating to go in and get attitude AND pay high prices at a salvage shop.

Most of the uber hipsters of the past have moved on to working record shops or install crews at various arts institutions, being replaced by some nice folks who have cute style and nice demeanor, yay, yay.

If you have never been, it is worth checking out.

What's up at Blankspace?
We just re-opened this past Friday (hence the late blog post) August 7th with "How Do You Know" a group exhibit of 16 Irish Artists curated by Gallery 126 in Galway, Ireland.

The opening went smooth and was well attended. We had our neighbors two piece band called Front Junk playing outside between the galleries, fun stuff. We were also celebrating the opening of Obi Kaufmann's new space called Sweet[art] gallery. Located next door on the 6602 side of the Compound Studios. Yay Obi.

The show at Blankspace runs through August 30th. Come by and check it out.

In other news I rearranged the gallery store and brought in some cute new items. Cal Overstock & Surplus
So I am sure you all know about Urban Ore, but what you may not know is that right down the street is a U.C. Berkeley building that houses many of the University's surplus items.

I was just in there this week looking for a table and wow, they have rows of chairs, desks, filing cabinets and random wonderful finds like bike parts old library card catalog files and large wooden drawers that looked like something out of a 1950's science lab...cool stuff.

The best part is most items are really priced to sell..cheap. Almost everything in the
warehouse can be purchased on the spot, but the more valuable equipment and computers are available twice a week at the public auctions. I have never attended, but my guess is if you really
want something , you will probably get it.

If you have never been, it is worth checking out.

Paco has a nice variety of stock items and will also work with you to make a custom order. Recently they opened a store front on Shattuck Ave. in Berkeley. I have not made it over to the store yet, but I go online all the time.

Barlata is a tapas bar located in the Temescal district of Oakland. I recently went there with some friends who were visiting, we were looking for someplace to get tapas that was easy going and not too pricey. Barlata fit the bill.

The restaurant is small and feels comfortable yet wonderfully cosmopolitan. I love that when you sit down they give you a bowl of mixed olives. Awesome. I love olives.

The wine ranges from somewhat pricey to very pricey, but the house red I had was yum.

When I go back I want to try the 3 gazpacho sampler, people around me had ordered it and it looked intriguing.

Extra points for a good espresso with a lemon rind twist to finish off my meal.

Local 123 is a new cafe that opened up down a little ways from Blankspace on San Pablo. I just checked it out for the first time on Tuesday. I can only comment on the coffee, well because, that is all I've had so far...but the coffee was very good.

The decor is clean and simple, and there is a great patio in the back...big bonus in the East Bay, so many cafes have either no outdoor space, or the space is very dark and dirty (yuck)..this is very appealing and thus far, clean.

Local 123 will also be hosting art exhibitions curated by Emma Spertus. The first show opens tonight!

Camille the proprietress of Magnet, is a super stylish, super sweet, petite powerhouse. Her keen eye for all things stylish flows perfectly into the decor of the store; with a minimalist approach, she has created a mixture of modern and vintage fixtures and furniture that combine perfectly to accentuate the fabulous clothing.

I bought a fabulous pair of wool/silk pinstriped pants there last year, that are still one of my faves. They are comfortable, stylish and very well crafted. Featured items in the store include denim, shoes, bags and of course great dresses and tops.

The store is not on the cheap side, but you definitely get what you pay for; well crafted, well designed pieces that will last more that one season.

“Just because there are questions, doesn’t mean there are answers” is a project inspired by a game of copy cat - where each artist tries to emulate one another’s style. The exhibition includes work by Joy Fritz, Sam Lopes, Matthew Momchilov, Matthew Pawlowski.

The exhibition of drawings and largescale wooden and paper mache artifacts are a result of the artists’ use of a game to stay inspired and connected to their queer histories and futures, of laughing in spite of deep pain, and constantly, creatively UNdefining themselves so that there are more questions and less answers.

Spirit Orb Color Field
an installation by Emily Sevier

Emily Sevier has created an installation of fabric spirit orbs influenced by the chromatic explorations of the Color Field painters and by the graphic color patterns of the 1960s. The soft and floppy felt orbs radiate a bright energy welcoming the viewer from a homespun portal to the otherworld.

Along with the sculpture she is showing some great new drawings. Not to miss!!

Well it has been a couple of weeks since i updated this bog...I apologize... I have been busy installing the latest Blankspace show and revamping the gallery store with new items and lovely objects.

Each is great in its own way. But I would like to add that I have found that I have found from experience that Twisters is great for shoes and A-line dresses, and that Pretty Penny has great 70's everything- I purchased more than a few great belts from there...and Premium has great prices...

Brown Sugar Kitchen in West Oakland.

I drive by this cute triangle shaped restaurant all the time on Mandela Parkway. When I lived in the neighborhood the building was vacant, then it was a series of unsuccessful restaurants...but I think Brown Sugar has found the right recipe for success.

Admittedly I have not even been into the location yet...but I attended the **Oakland Indie Awards this past Friday and had the pulled pork sandwich they were serving and it melted in my mouth, the flavors were strong, but not over powering and the smell of the sandwich made my mouthwater from across the building.

The next day I was talking to an artist Tellulah Terryll who works at Magnolia Editions located right in the neighborhood. She eats there all the time and she told me the Mac & Cheese is the best she ever had, and if that is not enough to entice you, they serve beignets.

I love Mac & Cheese and beignets and after that pulled pork sandwich experience I will be heading over to Brown Sugar Kitchen very soon.

Juror: Kevin B. Chen has been involved in the San Francisco Bay Area arts community for over 15 years as a curator, arts administrator, and visual artist. He has been the Program Director for the Visual Arts, Literary Series, and Jazz at Intersection at the Intersection for the Arts since 1998. He has served on selection panels for Creative Capital Foundation, San Francisco Arts Commission Cultural Equity Grants and Public Art Programs, City of San Jose Cultural Affairs Office, Alameda County Arts Commission, Arts Council Silicon Valley, WORKS/San Jose, San Francisco Recycling & Disposal, Inc., and the Headlands Center for the Arts. He has served on the Community Advisory Board of the San Francisco Art Institute, the Board of Directors for San Francisco Camerawork and Locus Arts, and currently serves on the Program Committee for the Headlands Center for the Arts and the Artist In Residence Program Advisory Board for San Francisco Recycling & Disposal, Inc.

Eligibility

Artists must live or have a studio in one of the 9 Bay Area Counties. Studio visits are scheduled May 29, 30, and 31. Artists or representatives must be available during the scheduled time.

How do I apply?

Standard entries must be submitted online. Works in all media are accepted. New media will only be accepted by mail.
For best results images should be sized to 800 x 800 pixels per inch and at a resolution of 72.

Submission & Fees: Basic entry fee includes up to 3 submissions, additional submissions are $5 each. Five (5) submission max per artist. No refunds. Online Registration: $25 basic entry fee + any additional submission fees + applicable membership. Participating artists must have current Pro Arts membership through July 24, 2009. Visual Aid vouchers accepted.

This Ace Hardware has been family run for over 40 years and this neighborhood institution has many things going for it. Top on the list is their great customer service, there is always someone to (happily) help you if needed. They also have convenient and fun price check machines everywhere, so if you can't wait for a salesperson or want to play ( I confess I love to use those machines, it reminds me of being a child and playing pretend grocery store)...

Beyond the customer service, this family run store is clean and has a great housewares department,a great lighting department and they carry many ramdom hardware store items, which is perfect for me as an artist. I love to wander the aisles and think about how I can use these mystery items.

Remedy Salon is located on 65 St in Emeryville.

Remedy is a cute salon located right around the corner for Blankspace. I have to admit I have known about this salon for a while now, I walk past it almost on a daily basis when walking my dogs. But for a long time I had a great hairstylist, so when she moved away...I was sad..and avoided going through the search of finding a new hairdresser for a long time (a process that is akin to finding a good mechanic or a new doctor).

Finally, I decided to try Remedy and since I had heard good things about Lona I made an appointment with her. I have to say I was nervous...well Lona was great! She was friendly, but not too talkative ( I like a friendly hairddresser, but I think there is a time for cutting and a time for talking)..she had the right amount of banter, enough to make me feel comfortable.

Cutting to the chase- Lona did a great haircut, the salon is small and comfortable, the other stylists all seemed nice and the prices are reasonable. I will be going back.

INDIE BIZ OF THE WEEK
Sweet Adeline Bakeshop is located on Adeline St @ 63rd St. in Berkeley.

This is a very cute and unpretentious little bakery. Lena (co-owner of The Compound Gallery) and I took a walk around our neighborhood this week and decided to make Sweet Adeline our destination. When we arrived after a pleasant stroll, we were hungry and ready for some good coffee. I ordered from their wall menu that changes daily with specials for sandwiches, quiche and soup. I ordered the turkey sandwich on their freshly baked focaccia bread. This was, I have to say, a spectacular sandwich-just the right amount of every ingredient-turkey, roasted tomatoes, and thinly sliced baby new potatoes with lettuce and dressing...yummy. Lena ordered the vegetarian friendly soup that came with croutons. Both meals were yum.

The pleasure did not end with the sandwich and coffee, I decided to try their macaron cookie that was filed with a blossoming orange butter cream-really? This cookie was to die for. Not only was it light and tasty, but the orange blossom taste stayed in your mouth like a taste explosion. When we left to continue our stroll I still had the pleasant aftertaste in my mouth. So, so, so tasty.

The whole meal was a winner, not something you can often say about the many Cafes that pepper the East Bay landscape. Sweet Adeline delivered from start to finish.

...and two bonus items in my eyes-The ENTIRE counter staff was friendly and happy to answer my questions about the pastries! and they have a water bowl out front for the pups!

I walked out of Sweet Adeline with a satisfied tummy and a feeling that everyone who worked there enjoyed their jobs and had a love for the food served.

Manifesto Bikes is located on 40th Ave. In Oakland. Owned by a great husband and wife team, this little shop carries some beautiful single speed bikes. We visited them a couple of times before making a purchase. Even though we left with nothing , but test drove a bunch of bikes, everyone was very nice to us and made us feel welcome.

When Jason did finally purchase a bike, one of the owners, Sam, was very helpful and Jason left with a great bike, a t-shirt and a picture of him and his new wheels. He also was told to come back to check in for a free tune-up and general follow-up on how the bike is doing.

The bikes are not cheap, but for what you get, they are worth the investment. The shop does offer used bikes, but the majority are new. What you pay for is a quality bike, but also top quality customer service. We left the shop knowing that if anything goes wrong or needs fixin' the folks at Manifesto have our backs...and that is a good feeling.

Welcoming Spring

In the spirit of Spring, I am thinking renewal, regrowth, and revisiting some of my favorite places this week. So, since I am late with my update, I thought I would give you my itinerary for this coming Tuesday.

First..Since it is the free Tuesday for Museums in SF, I will starting by going to 3rd St. and checking out YBCA-Nick Cave Show and SFMOMA- SECA show., if I have time I will pop over to the New Contemporary Jewish Museum to check it out.

Then...I am going to head over to the Mission and stop off at my new favorite coffee place Four Barrels, once good and caffeinated I am going to pop around and check out the Curiosity Shoppe, Therapy, the Bell Jar (if open), Paxton Gate, Needles and Pens and of course Rare Device. I will probably stop into Fritz for some tasty fries with fun dipping sauce.

I hope to be able to pop into some of the galleries and other tasty shops around the area, if I discover anything new I will let you know.

Hey All,
3 really great small businesses in Oakland have closed or are closing this week. We sadly say goodbye to Drift Jeans, Piedmont Stationers AND, it is so hard to say, The Parkway Speakeasy Theater.

So this week I stand again on my soapbox to continue preaching the importance of following up with good intentions. I know we all have them, when we say, "I have to get over to that gallery or new shop,"...well please do, we all say we will support and then for what ever reason we don't get ourselves over to the shops...well guess what if you don't come, they will go..away.

I am asking you all to make every effort to help support all of these small businesses, even if you go and just spend $5, it adds up and keeps them going....

Their gallery is located in the back of the store has been host to some really
great art shows.

The store is petite but well stocked,the owners (artist Lisa Congdon and designer
Rena Tom)know what they like and have worked hard to bring in only the cutest of
the cute items.

For this site-specific piece Dacher combines her skills, utilizing paint, metal, tilework and more to create a largescale, lushly colored, pop imagery.

Well another week has gone by and it is time once again for the Indie Biz of the week posting. Before I get to it though I wanted to talk a short bit about how excited I am that Blankspace will be celebrating 3 years this coming March!! Stay tuned for more updates on that..

INDIE BIZ OF THE WEEK

Slash Jeans in Berkeley, CA is the indie biz of the week. I think this is one of the best places to find the perfect pair of jeans. Period.

I hate shopping for jeans, they are either way to long or made for girls with no booty. When Jason and I walked in to Slash for the first time we were like kids in a candy store. First of all let me say, a little sheepishly, that I was painfully unaware that Slash had started selling new jeans, we had been searching for the holy grail of jeans all over the country, and all along the store was literally right up the street from us. The last time I was there was to go to the fabulous basement filled with hundreds of great vintage jeans, cords, you name it, but the new upstairs section...absolutely yummy.

The "jeans lady" as people refer to her, is super nice and helpful and seems to know everything there is to know about jeans. I told her what I was looking for, she looked me up and down and then proceeded to pull about 12 pairs of jeans for me to try on. I really like that they encourage you to walk to the dressing room with a Doctor Seuss like pile of jeans in your arms, none of this 3 items or less.

Anyway, I did end up finding the perfect jeans for me, that fit like butter. I think I may wear them more than anything else in my wardrobe, it it time for me to go back and get another pair. Skinny jeans are everywhere in this store...BUT there are also many other great styles in stock if skinny is not your thing.

Bonus: they will hem any pair of pant for you, and they do a great job.

What more can I say, check them out for yourself, I think you will fall in love like I did. I believe everyone should treat themselves to a great pair of jeans at least once a year.

Southern Exposure's 9th Annual Monster Drawing Rally

Southern Exposure announces the 9th Annual Monster Drawing Rally at the Verdi Club, a live drawing and fundraising event featuring over 130 artists. (shameless self promotion alert- Kerri and Jason have drawings that will be raffled in the "Drawing Drawing" later in the evening)

Providing the basic necessities of the drawing practice--pencils, charcoal, pens, markers, ink, and paper--Southern Exposure creates the context while the artists create the content of the drawings. The evening will consist of four one-hour shifts with approximately 30 artists drawing simultaneously each hour. As the drawings are completed they will be hung on the walls and available for purchase for $60 each. The Monster Drawing Rally promises to be an action-packed spectacle you won't want to miss!

INDIE BIZ OF THE WEEK

Four Barrels Coffee in SF is the indie biz of the week. I had been hearing about this great new coffee shop in the Mission and when I was visiting Southern Exposure Gallery the other day I finally went in...if you go on Yelp there is a lot of talk about this business, some of the comments and quibbles are quite funny...but the bottom line; and this comes straight from a self proclaimed coffee snob-I had one of the best cappuccinos I have ever had outside of Italy.

Bottom line, it is all about the coffee, and Four Barrels gets it...I don't care if a monkey in an elephant suit is serving my coffee, if the barista can make a good cap, I am happy. I was walking down the sidewalk and every time I took a sip I sighed with contentment...

**Side note, the other best place (in my opinion) to get a great cup of coffee is Bittersweet Chocolate Cafe on College ave in Oakland.

So I said I would start doing this on a regular basis as part of my New Years resolution...so week 2 and I am still good to my resolution...yeah.

It has been such an amazing week for the country, OBAMA!!! We held an inaugural party at Blankspace in conjunction with Lena Reynoso's Forty Four Presidents show. Lena officially moved the Obama painting into the main gallery to take its rightful place amongst all the rest. We had fun, mixing presidential inspired drinks like the Obama on the Ba-rock's, Abe's tropical night in hell and Quincy's Alligator...fun and historical who ever thought we could use those words in the same sentence.

INDIE BIZ OF THE WEEK

The Curiosity Shoppe in SF is the indie biz of the week. Since just finding out about them a couple of weeks ago from the beloved Lena Reynoso, I keep coming across their name and awesomeness. Besides having a kick ass name they have a plethora of amazing and unique items for living, working, crafting.

New Years Resolutions

Ok, so I know I have not been super consistent about posting to this blog...but good news, on my long list of New Years resolutions is to blog on a regular basis. I am also going to be adding my favorite indie business of the week and adding an artist of the month...sounds ambitious right, it is, but I resolve to stick to it...really.

Let me start by saying it is almost time for Blankspace to celebrate our three year anniversary. I cannot believe it has been 3 yrs. already. As they say, time flies when your having fun. Seriously, having Blankspace has been such a great experience. This has been a dream of mine for so long and I still sometimes look around and cannot believe that it actually exists.

The support we have received from people coming in to visit has been amazing. When we started this space, we could not have imagined how happy it would make other people. We get such nice words of support on a regular basis, it warms my heart....(pausing to wipe a tear)..I hope we can continue to be a part of this community for years to come.

So lets get to it!!

ARTIST OF THE MONTH

Jessica Dacher
I first met Jessica when I was asked to jury a show at Sebastopol Center for the Arts and she had applied to the open call. She ended up being one of the people I gave an award to, and I did not know she was a neighbor until the night of the opening when I read her resume for the first time. It is funny how sometimes you have to leave your home to meet a neighbor.

Jessica's work is fun, she creates great layers of texture and her sense of color is great. These images don't do the colors justice, she gets these amazingly rich colors that you just want to bite into. Her work is a mix of tiles, collages and paintings, she has also recently been creating great sculptures lately.

To sum it up I think that Jessica is a talented artist and is one of the nicest people you will ever meet.

So it has been a few weeks since I have blogged. A lot has happened in that time, there was a battle with City Council, an historic election (yeah OBAMA!!), a disappointing loss for No on 8, with a new battle brewing (stay tune for more on that!!) and an ongoing economic crisis. So I have much to say...

With all of these things going on the idea of community has been floating on the top of my brain, now more than ever. Right before most of these things went down, I curated a show at Blankspace called Double Exposure that highlights just a few of the great artists who do double duty as amazing gallery owners, curators and administrators. The idea behind the show was to really highlight them as working artists and to also spotlight the great spaces they are working with.

As anyone who has met me knows, I believe strongly in supporting the local arts community, my feeling about it is that when one of us does well, we all do well.

So it gave me great pleasure to be able to put a show like Double Exposure together and to know that it will continue on as a multi-part show in 2009 at Rowan Morrison and possibly 2010 at another venue.

It made me very happy to see how quickly the Oakland art scene mobilized a couple of weeks ago when the City Council was threatening to eliminate the arts grants funding already promised for the 08/09 fiscal year, as well as putting the entire Cultural Arts and Marketing dept on the chopping block. Two of the Council members met separately and came up with this plan themselves the Thursday night before the monthly meeting the following Tuesday. Essentially giving the other Council members and the public 4 days notice. In those 4 days we were able to come together for a meeting of the minds, gather over 300 ipetition signatures, send over 2000 emails and phone calls to the council members and to show up enmass at the Council meeting with over 300 people, 200 of which went on to take their speaker card minute at the podium. ( I am happy to report these efforts resulted in success with keeping the grants for this fiscal year and within the Cultural Arts dept.-the dept was saved and instead of laying off everyone or even 2 people, jobs were saved and people made very selfless sacrifices by opting to split one full time position into 2 part-time positions).

This mobilization, not only sent a very strong and clear message to the Council about the importance of the arts in Oakland, it also , I think, showed the members of the community that working together for a greater cause, actually works. This has always been the underlying belief that the Art Murmur was built on. I hope members of the greater community walk away with this burned in their minds.

Riding on this heartwarming show of support, this past First Friday, I picked-up an EastBay Express and to my pleaseure and surprise there was a full page advertising First Friday, paid for by EastBay Express, pretty awesome show of support!!!..if this was not enough they have gone on to create this amazing pledge of support for people to spend $100 shopping at locally owned establishments this holiday season. By pledging your support of the local economy you could win $1000 in goodies. I am so happy to see a local paper ( who for those who do not know the EastBay Express was recently bought back by a group of employees, so it truely is a locally owned and operated weekly again, so support them when you can) showing so much support for the local economy. EBExpress has even gotten other weekly's around the country to create their own local shopping pledges...my heart is warm and fuzzy right now just thinking about it.

Well, I have so much more to say about the idea of community, but will wrap up with this: I think the Presidential election and the City Council meeting both had a great impact on the national and local levels to re-energize people and help re-awaken the idea that your small contribution can make a big difference.

So support small business and shop local.

When is tea just a tea?

When it is just a tea.

Seems that there has been some confusion about the afternoon teas that Blankspace and the Compound are hosting once a month. The teas usually happen on the 3rd Sunday of the month. We offer up Numi Teas both iced and hot and some free baked goodies. Sounds pretty delightful right? But it seems that people are confused about the what and the why...

So here is a little back story to help clarify:

The Compound gallery and Blankspace collectively came up with the idea to help bring in foot traffic on a regular Sunday. Nothing more, nothing less. Tea seemed to be the best way to have an event without having to host another big event for the month (much easier than the rock & roll bingo we use to host!). Having it on the 3rd Sunday seems the best choice because it usually falls in the middle of an exhibition, no too close to an opening or first Friday reception and by then we have cards or info for our next exhibition, not to mention foot traffic has usually slowed by then. Also, it is a nice way for us to support and be supported by a great local company, Numi Tea....

I hope that explains it....tea on Sunday is fun....nothing more.

Change is in the Air
Now lets talk about a few changes and happenings with a couple of art galleries in Oakland.

If you have not already heard Adam Hatch has taken over the space that was Ego Park and will be calling the space simply "Hatch". If I had a great last name like that I would also use it as a gallery name. Unfortunately "Johnson" doesn't cut it. Anyway, he had already been curating the space for 6 months prior to the official change but I am excited to see the shows he will be hosting in the coming year. Adam has been the master mind behind some epic Oakland exhibitions in the past. One to watch....

Esteban Sabar gallery has officially closed and is rumored to become another gallery. I don't have much info on the new tenant, but I thought it was worth mentioning.

In the next few months there will be some changes happening over in the Jack London Square corner. Swarm will be moving one block up and over and Pro Arts is said to be moving over to the the Swarm space and possibility be taking over the studios? But that has not be fact checked so do not quote on that. I am excited to see what the new Swarm gallery will look like. Speaking of both spaces there are two good shows happening at both right now, so if you find yourself in the London Square 'hood check them out.

Rowan Morrison gallery will be doing a book with artist John Casey due to be released in mid fall, very excited to see the fruits of that labor. Love John Casey, love Rowan Morrison.

and of course I can't end this bloggy blog without mentioning the next exhibition at blankspace. We will be hosting a exhibit( having trouble coming up with a kick-ass title) of artists who are gallery director/owners. Let me tell you the artists I am including in the exhibit are just the tip of the iceberg. Once I starting thinking about it and writing down names I began to realize that this is a much larger project than one exhibit. So it looks like part 2 may be hosted at Rowan Morrison in 2009.

Blankspace Community Board

Hello Everyone,

Well here is the second installment of the Blank[space] Blog. For this weeks blog I would like to list all of the exhibition/artist opportunities that I have info for. Please don't be greedy- forward this info on to all for the artists that you think may be interested.

One thing I would like to do before starting the list is to help de-mystify the "Open Call". There are many open calls out there, some free, some not. I would like to help you as artists to understand that just because there is a fee for an open call, you should NOT disregard it. Some of the most prestigious open calls have a small entry fee.

It is easy to think "Well why should I pay a fee to pay for a show I may not be in"? What you should understand is that yes, these open call fees do go to the gallery, but what it pays for is the galley's efforts to create a great opportunity for emerging artists . The fees really go to paying the time and effort to create the call, the advertising, press, and most importantly securing a well known juror that will look at your work.

All of this may not seem important to you, but if you break it down it is a very important opportunity to not only exhibit your work, but have it seen by respected curators and gallery owners. In my experience, just because your work is not chosen for a specific exhibition, does not mean that you may not receive a phone call or email for the juror down the road for a studio visit or inclusion in a show they are curating.

One great example is the Bay Area Currents show at the Oakland Art Gallery. One year they had Rosemund Felsen, of the well known Rosamund Felsen Gallery in Santa Monica California. She juried the show at OAG and then went on to do a group show at her own gallery with some of the Bay Area artists from the OAG show and studio visits she had done.

She has since picked up at least 2 of the artists to represent and show regularly. None of this would have happened if OAG had not taken the time to create this opportunity...get what I am saying...? Your fee helps the gallery to keep creating these great opportunities.

Prospectus for California History Walk at the Oakland Art Gallery September 2008 Artists are invited to create a single work about an experience or memory pertaining to California history. This memory can be personal or traditional/ collective, or evoke the “natural” history of the state. A personal history can be of a particular place, a remembered event or a personal influence; a childhood field trip, or a more recent visit to a particular site or building. It does, however, need to be something demonstrably evocative of California. A work based in traditional or collective memory might evoke a “historical” person, landmark or event. Natural history includes events relating to any flora, fauna, fish or fowl, land or seascape that is California. Why California? Why history? And why a memory of history? California has often been invoked as the furthest frontier and the seedbed for the future of the country, for good or ill. It is undeniably a place that nourishes new ideas and trends. But California has as many histories as inhabitants-- and few of those histories have been publicly explored. History is based upon memory as much as fact—and on who has control of the historical narrative. This exhibition offers an opportunity for Californian artists to explore the relationship between their own recollections and experiences and public conceptions of the state’s past. Memories of course can be investigated and substantiated as the artist see fit. The work will be judged upon artistic integrity, poignancy and aesthetics, rather than on historical accuracy. Already existing works can be submitted, (work no older than 3 years please) but this is primarily an invitation to create something new. The Closing Event: At the conclusion of the show there will be a closing event in which all artists will be required to participate. Through a “cakewalk,” works will be exchanged for either another piece of art or for a prize. The event will be interactive and non-submitting participants will be able to purchase a ticket to play. Hello blogger world, this is the very first blog that blankspace has ever done..fun..

Well lets get to it..

As most of you know by now blankspace took the summer off. It was great to have some time to ourselves, of course the plan was to relax and regenerate...well not much of either happened. But here is a rundown of some things that happened or are coming up.

If you are reading this blog than you are probably familiar with the blankspace. Well Jason and I were fortunate to have a 2 person show of our own work at the Fleetwing gallery in New Jersey. It was really fun to create a whole new body of work for the show.
